Back-to-Back Pinoy Boxing Victories by Brian Viloria and Nonito Donaire

19 April 2009

The historic Araneta Coliseum was the site of back-to-back boxing wins by "The Hawaiian Punch" Brian Viloria and "The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire against their Mexican opponents.

Dubbed "The Flash and The Furious," the twin boxing main events did not disappoint millions of Filipino fight fans as Viloria completed a spectacular 11th round knockout win over Ulises Solis while Donaire finished Raul "Cobra" Martinez in the fourth round of their encounter.

With their victories, Viloria captured the IBF light flyweight crown while Donaire successfully defended his IBF flyweight title.

The win is sweeter for Viloria who went into the ring as the underdog but he had clearly prepared well for this fight displaying his speed and greater hitting power for the entire duration of the bout.

Donaire, on the other hand, was never in trouble against the overpowered Raul Martinez. The Fil-American fighter was taller, had greater reach and had much more leverage as he pounded his Mexican opponent who showed heart in reaching the fourth round. Other fighters would have quit much earlier. In the end, Donaire's power proved too much decking the Mexican with a left upper cut and forcing the referee to call a halt to the bout.
In a rare display of gratitude to the host country, Martinez, the beaten Mexican, went around the ring waving a Filipino flag with tears in his eyes apparently not so much because of his loss but because of the kindness and hospitality he has felt from Filipino boxing fans.

Sori po kung nahuli 'tong post ko sa boxing. Mas nauna po kasing ipinalabas sa 'Pinas ang UFC bouts which were held in Canada. Delayed telecast yung sa Araneta. Hehe. The power of reverse technology!

Mabuhay ang Pinoy!
