Brillante Mendoza Becomes the First Filipino to Win Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival

25 May 2009

Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza became the first Filipino to win the Best Director award with his full-length film Kinatay at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.  Kinatay tells the story of a woman kidnapped, raped, murdered and chopped to pieces.  The film stars Coco Martin, Mercedes Cabral and Maria Isabel Lopez.

In winning the coveted award, Mendoza beat other better known directors such as Tarantino who directed the Brad Pitt-starred movie Inglourious Basterds, Pedro Almodovar ("Los Abrazos Rotos" or Broken Embraces), Jacques Audiard (Un "Prophete" or A Prophet) and Ang Lee who directed Taking Woodstock.

This is the video clip from GMAnews.tv of Mendoza's victory:

And this is the one from ABS-CBN via kyte.tv (I hope you don't see a "Page not found" message):

Speaking of Kinatay, Director Brillante Mendoza admits that "there were some critics who wouldn't like it kasi medyo violent 'yung film.

More when I return.
