RP Football Team Loses to an Unseen H1N1 Viral Enemy — Request to Shorten Quarantine Period Denied by Singapore

23 June 2009

In a jolting heartbreaker, the Philippine football team to the 1st Asian Youth Games lost its campaign without playing any game, succumbing to an unseen enemy, the H1N1 flu virus.

This came after the Singaporean Health Ministry, upon consultations with the World Health Organization (WHO), denied a formal Philippine request lodged by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Harry Angping to shorten to five days the quarantine period imposed on the entire football squad after a lone Filipino booter tested positive for H1N1 shortly after arriving in Singapore last week.

The RP football team will come back home on June 28, Sunday after the end of the quarantine period and just before the 1st Asian Youth Games start on June 29.

Let's hope and pray that the rest of the Philippine sports contingent who will fly into Singapore during the weekend will be free of H1N1 and be able to play all of their scheduled games.
