Pardoned OFW May Vecina Is Back Home from Kuwait

OFW WATCH
30 June 2009

May Vecina, the Filipina domestic helper who was pardoned recently by the Emir of Kuwait is now back home in the country.  Vecina arrived at 9am and immediately proceeded to the Department of Foreign Affairs where she was met by Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Vice President Noli De Castro.  From the DFA, Vecina went to the OWWA.

Vecina, 30 years old and a mother of two, was sentenced to die by a Kuwaiti court after killing her employer's youngest son Salem Sulaiman Al-Otaib, and attempting to kill the child's 13-year-old brother Abdulla by slitting his throat and stabbing the 17-year-old sister Hajer in January 2007.

She reportedly suffered severe maltreatment at the hands of her employer causing her to sustain "temporary insanity" leading to her deadly rampage. Vecina also alleged that her employer repeatedly tried to sexually molest her but that she fought off those attempts.

On July 2008, the Emir of Kuwait commuted her sentence to life imprisonment and she was eventually pardoned this month mainly because of her good behavior and by efforts of OFW groups and the Philippine government.

Even as she regained her freedom, May Vecina reminded authorities that there are still 28 OFWs languishing in Kuwaiti jails, two of them on death row.
