CNN's Emily Chang Reports on China's Crackdown Against Drunk Driving, 17,000 Drunk Drivers Nabbed So Far

26 August 2009

In this CNN report, Emily Chang tells us about China's massive crackdown against drunk driving prompted by public outcry against recent fatal traffic accidents.  The crackdown has so far netted more than 17,000 people including a Communist Party official in charge of discipline.

Although penalties for drunk driving in China are viewed as relatively light, one should not forget that this is a place where capital punishment is a fixture of the legal system. Emily reports that the Supreme People's Court recently upheld the death sentence for a male driver who killed four people while driving under the influence.
