President Arroyo Declares September 7 and 21, 2009 as Non-Working Holidays But Excludes the Electronics and BPO Sectors

5 September 2009

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared September 7 and 21, 2009, both Mondays, as non-working public holidays.  The declaration, however, has been modified to exclude the electronics industry and the BPO (business process outsourcing) sector following a request by DTI Secretary Peter Favila.

September 7 has been set aside as a national day of mourning for the late Brother Eraño G. Manalo, also known as Ka Erdy, who presided over the Iglesia ni Cristo's remarkable growth as a worldwide religious congregation since 1963.  Ka Erdy will be laid to rest September 7, Monday, at the Tabernacle inside the INC Central Complex in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.

September 21 is in observance of the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Fitr marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

This article tells us what Eid-al-Fitr is:
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast and participate in pious activities such as charitable giving and peace-making. It is a time of intense spiritual renewal for those who observe it. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking).

  1. Unfair for BPO workers. If there is a Holday then make it everyones Holiday. If you would like to withdraw a holiday, just withdraw it! It really doesnt make any sense that we declare a holiday with excemptions.. This really is disturbing.. BPO and Electronics will be working.. Knowing that most of their Countrymen gets a double pay during work, while the BPO sector doesnt get anything... This should be rethinked.. kasi Filipino parin ang mga nagtratrabaho sa BPO and Electronic Sector
