Senator Noynoy Aquino Announces Decision to Run for President of the Philippines in 2010, Club Filipino, September 9, 2009, 8:06am

9 September 2009

Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, on the 40th day death anniversary of his late mother President Cory Aquino, has announced his decision to run for the presidency of the Philippines in the 2010 elections.  He made the announcement at the Club Filipino in San Juan where Cory took his oath of office as President of the Philippines in February 1986.

With those words, amid cheers and acclamation of his supporters gathered at the Club Filipino, Noynoy Aquino accepted the heavy burden of leading a large segment of the Philippine opposition on the road to the presidency and in setting the Philippines on the path to meaningful change.

If he wins in 2010, Noynoy Aquino will be the first bachelor President of the Philippines.

Shalani Soledad, Noynoy's fiancee, was in the crowd at Club Filipino but she kept herself well in the background much like Cory Aquino did when her husband Ninoy held the limelight.

Shalani Soledad Speaks Briefly with GMA News' Sherrie Ann Torres — Expresses Support for Noynoy Aquino's Decision, September 2, 2009

2 September 2009

Shalani Soledad, girlfriend of  Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino gave a brief remark on cam to GMA News' Sherrie Ann Torres.  Shalani said, "Kung ano yung magiging announcement ni Senator Noynoy, kung ano yung kaniyang magiging desisyon, I will always stand by him and of course we will always be supportive of his decision."

In an obvious effort to downplay their relationship at this critical moment in the Senator's life, Shalani was not present at the Club Filipino for Senator Noynoy's announcement Wednesday. He stayed at home in Valenzuela and contented herself with merely watching Noynoy on TV. However, this early, Shalani's supporters are gearing up for the campaign that her boyfriend is sure to wage in 2010.

It's Noynoy Aquino for President in 2010 as Mar Roxas Gives Way— Kiko Pangilinan Prepared to Drop Own VP Bid, Sept 1 2009 at Club Filipino

1 September 2009

In an act reminiscent of Doy Laurel's giving way to Cory Aquino to be the united opposition's standard bearer for the 1986 snap presidential polls, Senator Mar Roxas made what is undoubtedly the most difficult and most painful decision of his political life.  Early tonight, before a crowd gathered at Club Filipino, Mar Roxas announced that he is dropping his presidential bid to give way to Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's run for president in 2010.

It's quite odd to say this but this could probably be the "turning point" of the 2010 presidential campaign that has not even officially begun. This makes Noynoy Aquino, who will make his own formal announcement tomorrow, the man to beat in 2010.

Evidently moved and surprised by the turn of events, Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan interviewed live in tonight's Saksi by Mike Enriquez,  acknowledged the great sacrifice made by Senator Mar Roxas and expressed his own readiness to forego his own vice presidential bid in 2010 in order to forge the widest possible support for Noynoy's candidacy.

After making the announcement, Mar and Noynoy got into an SUV with Mar Roxas driving it because he owned the car.  Mar has come under criticism from many quarters but after doing what he just did, I believe he's elevated himself in the eyes of many people.

By stepping down, Mar Roxas has raised himself.  Because he has chosen to lower himself, the Philippines gets a chance to rise up.

Whatever happens to him in the future, Mar obtains for himself today a secure place in our country's history.  Without having reached a statesman's age, he has played a statesman's role. As the prospect of opposition unity looms, it puts pressure on former President Erap Estrada to emulate the example and give way as well.
