Celebrating Pinay Heroine Mildred Perez — Who Among Our 2010 Presidentiables Measures Up to the Decency of This Honest Pinay OFW?

7 June 2009

A lowly Pinay OFW who showed remarkable honesty in returning to its owner a considerable sum of money while scrounging in a Hongkong trash bin should serve as a standard in choosing our country's next leaders come 2010.

Based on this Inquirer article, she found and returned $176,000 in cash (in denomination of $1,000) and four checks" of various amounts. She found the money stuffed in a small packet in a garbage bin on the corner of Pottinger Street and Des Voeux Road on May 29 and returned it the following day after contacting the owner.

This Pinay heroine is Mildred Perez, a native of Sitio Anao, Barangay Aliaga in Bambang, Nueva Viscaya who was forced to resort to scrounging in Hongkong after her employer reportedly assaulted her sexually. She filed a case against her alleged assailant which left her without a job (Hongkong law prohibits Perez from taking up employment during the pendency of her case) forcing her to resort to scrounging to sustain herself while pursuing her legal case in Hongkong.

Here is Mildred's heart-warming story of honesty and integrity and faith and courage told in these GMA 7 video reports via GMAnews.tv:

Mildred's honesty and that of her tricycle driver husband Eddie who himself reportedly returned  a bag containing P20,000 to a passenger (please see this GMAnews.tv article), have not gone unrewarded. Nueva Vizcaya Congressman Carlos Padilla said that Congress has passed House Resolution 1212 commending Mildred Perez.  The same GMAnews.tv article says:
Padilla, who helped raised some money, confirmed that a P100,000 financial support for Mildred’s family is now ready on top of the P50,000, which will be coming from the provincial government and additional financial support from Mayor Benjamin Cuaresma of Bambang town.

Eddie was also offered a job at the provincial office of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Mildred is now waiting for the schedule of her trip back to the country with the help of the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong
I know that Mildred Perez will become an iconic figure of our time,  a woman who typifies the best in every Filipina, who continues to battle the odds and comes out on top not in terms of earthly riches or worldly power but in the infinitely greater measure of basic decency, human dignity and unequaled respect in the eyes of her fellow Filipinos.

We  can teach our children to aspire for high things such as becoming President of the Philippines, or Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, or a Senator of the Republic or we can teach them to aspire for something much better, something that will make them truly blessed — to have character, decency, faith and courage like that of a Filipina named Mildred Perez.

2010 Presidential Campaign Issues

Readers who by now are a bit familiar with my site will notice the poll in my sidebar entitled "2010 Presidential Campaign Issues." For posterity, I now include a copy of said poll in this article.

A few clarificatory points are in order:
  1. My primary objective in doing this survey is to influence the tendency of the 2010 campaign towards issues and away from personalities.
  2. Another primary objective is to determine how well the choice labeled: "Reestablish respect for the Philippines by actively promoting Filipino cultural heritage" will perform compared with the other choices. Remember that this is a blog that was birthed by, and remains committed to, the need to promote Filipino cultural heritage.
  3. You may select up to nine (9) choices before casting your vote.  Of course, if you want to, you can select only 1 or several that you really like most. That way, your top choices will land on top.
  4. I wanted to provide more choices but ten (10) is the limit that the Vizu system allows.  This is a definite limitation in this poll which might just lead to a part 2 for this poll.
  5. This is my very first time to do a Vizu web poll. There are many things that I don't know about Vizu web polls.
  6. I have nothing at all to do with what appears at the bottom of the Vizu web poll. The words "Earn $5 Cash Now" appeared automatically when I created this Vizu web poll. I had nothing to do with putting them there.
I hope you'll find time to cast your vote on this poll. Please ask your family and friends to do likewise.  This is our chance to shape the 2010 campaign into a campaign for real CHANGE rather than just a senseless circus staged by the personalities who are running.  Many voters who are disgusted with personalities will at least look at issues and, given a decent forum, will sit down to discuss them especially if these are close to their hearts.  Polls like this one give us the opportunity to draw out these voters thereby enriching the electoral process.

When Filipino voters demand that candidates adopt the issues paradigm, that's the time when candidates will be compelled to run campaigns compatible with standards that the voters require.  Only the certified eggheads will fail to respond.

Aside of course from the choices expressed through your votes, I'd be delighted to find your comments and suggestions on this post.

Calling All Filipino Bloggers to Congregate at Filipinos Unite!!!

Prayer Tag And Link For The Philippines And The Filipinos

Just like Ana Lindenhann of Copenhagen, Denmark from whose blog, Filipina Mom in Denmark,  I first learned about it, I support Filipinos Unite!!! of Bro. Mel Alarilla in his effort to unite all Filipino bloggers around the world.

Instructions

This is a prayer tag and link for the Philippines and the Filipinos. You are enjoined to utter this prayer for nine (9) consecutive days and to tag as many bloggers as you can with preference for Filipinos. But only bona fide Filipinos shall be included in the official registry of Filipino bloggers in this blog. Each time a new blogger makes a link, be sure to send me an email of the entire link through melalarilla@gmail.com so that the official list will be consolidated in a master list in this blog. For our Muslim brothers, you may make your own special prayer formula but you must never deviate from the formula of this entire post.

Prayer
Dear heavenly Father, we consecrate to you our beloved country- the Philippines and all the Filipinos around the world. We acknowledge Father that apart from You, we can do nothing and it is only your divine providence and grace that can unite all Filipinos as one nation. We therefore humble ourselves before your throne. We confess all our sins to you individually and collectively as a nation. Forgive us our sins Father and wash us clean by the precious blood of Your beloved Son- Jesus Christ. Mend our wicked ways and let us experience a strong and genuine spiritual revival for ourselves and for our country. Let the Holy Spirit imbibe us with power, love and wisdom to return to Your path of holiness and righteousness. Bless our country, heavenly father. Bless all Filipinos wherever they maybe. Let progress, unity, harmony, stability, justice, peace and prosperity reign in our country.

Bless our leaders, from the President down to the lowest Barangay official. Touch their hearts that they may serve our country with all honesty and with love and integrity. Bless our children and our future generation. And bless us all Father in all aspects of our lives. This we pray to You heavenly Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Morale Booster from Old, Formidable Warrior Jovito Salonga

6 February 2009

This afternoon, I had the chance to talk over the phone with Senator Jovito Salonga.  I had faxed to his office at Kilosbayan and to his residence my appeal to the Philippine government to suspend the diggings at Monumento and give way to public consultation that will save the Monumento from further desecration.

Senator Salonga was kind enough to hear my small voice over the phone.  He was in agreement with the call for consultation over the issue of protecting national dignity and honor at the Bonifacio Monument.  I expect to hear a public pronouncement on Monumento from Sen. Jovito Salonga, easily one of the greatest living Filipinos.

Humility is a hallmark of this man's character.

Here's an excerpt from Senator Salonga's "A Letter to the Filipino Youth of Today" published in the maiden issue of Living News and Good Education, June 1, 2005 (the entire article is found in the The Jovito R. Salonga Journal).

"Later, Japanese troops landed in Lingayen, Pangasinan, and in several places in Luzon. Filipino-American troops in those places fought back but had to retreat to Bataan and Corregidor. On December 26, 1941, Manila was declared an open city, which means the Japanese could enter freely without armed resistance. On January 2, 1942, Japanese officers and soldiers were swarming around Manila and surrounding areas, such as Pasig and Marikina. Because of the abuses committed by the enemy, especially against Filipino women and children, I went underground and joined the fight against Japan. During the Holy Week of 1942, I was captured by the Japanese military police (kempeitai), was tortured, jailed in Pasig, then to Fort Santiago, transferred to the City Jail on San Marcelino, then to the Old Bilibid on Azcarraga, and eventually sentenced by the Japanese military tribunal to a prison term of 15 years of hard labor. By a stroke of good luck, I was released from Muntinglupa one year later (1941) on the occasion of kigen setsu the Foundation Day of Japan. In 1944, I was allowed by the Supreme Court to take the bar examination and I passed it with a good rating. I joined the guerrillas in Rizal. US forces landed in Leyte; in the second week of January 1945, they landed in Lingayen, Pangasinan and Manila was liberated by American GIs, guided by Filipino guerrillas, in February 1945. Other places were also liberated in quick succession. The atomic bomb was dropped by US Air Force on 2 Japanese cities: Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Japan surrendered to the US in August 1945."

How's that again? "Passed the bar with a good rating?"

Here's what another source say really happened:

"However, because of the advent of World War II, he postponed taking the Philippine Bar Examination until 1944—which he and José Diokno both topped with a grade point average of 95.3%, the 2nd highest score in Philippine Bar history (Florenz Regalado holds 1st place)."
