RP Football Team Loses to an Unseen H1N1 Viral Enemy — Request to Shorten Quarantine Period Denied by Singapore

23 June 2009

In a jolting heartbreaker, the Philippine football team to the 1st Asian Youth Games lost its campaign without playing any game, succumbing to an unseen enemy, the H1N1 flu virus.

This came after the Singaporean Health Ministry, upon consultations with the World Health Organization (WHO), denied a formal Philippine request lodged by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Harry Angping to shorten to five days the quarantine period imposed on the entire football squad after a lone Filipino booter tested positive for H1N1 shortly after arriving in Singapore last week.

The RP football team will come back home on June 28, Sunday after the end of the quarantine period and just before the 1st Asian Youth Games start on June 29.

More on this development in this report by Ivan Mayrina courtesy of GMANews.tv:

Let's hope and pray that the rest of the Philippine sports contingent who will fly into Singapore during the weekend will be free of H1N1 and be able to play all of their scheduled games.

RP Football Team Quarantined in Singapore After One Team Member Tested H1N1 Positive

22 June 2009

The entire Philippine football team to the 1st Asian Youth Games has been quarantined in Singapore following findings that one of its members is infected with the H1N1 flu virus.  That infected team member, aged 14, is now in medical quarantine and is reportedly doing well at the Communicable Disease Center while the rest of the team has been given three bungalows at the Aloha Resort Hotel where they are totally isolated for nine days from the rest of the other nation's sports contingents.

Harry Angping, Chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, disclosed this development in a live interview with Raffy Tima at QTV's Balitanghali today.  The quarantine being imposed on the RP football team by the Singaporean medical authorities appear to be total as Angping himself said that he tried to visit the team at the resort hotel but was not allowed to do so.

Angping said he will be meeting  with tournament officials today including the Chairman of the Singapore Sports Council, Alex Chan, to request that the Philippine team be given consideration and allowed to play in the football tournament which is now in its elimination stage ahead of the Games' formal opening on June 29 (Monday).

The bulk of  the RP delegation to the 1st Asian Youth Games will be leaving by Saturday and Sunday (June 27 and 28) for Singapore and Angping has requested the DOH to screen them closely so that those who might show symptoms of the H1N1 virus may no longer be allowed to join the delegation. These include teams in shooting, bowling, aquatics, beach volleyball and other sports.

More on this story in this Balitanghali report by Raffy Tima courtesy of GMANews.tv:

It is ironic that the same RP football team reportedly got their flu vaccine shots here in Manila before they proceeded to Singapore, with each flu shot costing P700.

The lesson here, which the DOH should repeatedly stress as often as the need to wash our hands frequently while singing two rounds of "Happy Birthday" is that as of today, June 22, 2009, no flu vaccine exists that will guarantee protection against H1N1.

The flu vaccine that was reportedly developed by Swish pharmaceuticals giant Novartis in its German facility a few days ago is still in the testing and evaluation stage and won't be ready for commercial use until a few months from now.

In fact, you will recall that Secretary Duque himself has said on TV that the Philippine government has not yet placed any order for the purchase of any H1N1 vaccine.

The flu shots that were given to our RP booters are those for the regular seasonal flu virus — these are flu shots that we Filipinos have not grown accustomed to and these are flu shots which have not shielded a member of the RP team from getting infected with H1N1.

This is my own guess: it might have been better if our team members took Tamiflu in prophylactic mode (one capsule a day for ten days) instead of getting the flu shots before they left for Singapore.  Whereas the flu shots are practically useless against H1N1, Tamiflu is the antiviral drug of choice, in the absence of an H1N1-specific vaccine, in the global battle against H1N1.

Let's hope and pray that a miracle saves our RP football team from elimination in Singapore because of an H1N1 default.

Senator Legarda Appeals to the DOH to "Bombard People with right info on swine flu" — YES! — Start with Flight No. of First Confirmed H1N1 Case in RP

27 May 2009

While browsing the Senate website, I ran accross this press release by the office of Senator Loren Legarda.  Senator Legarda is Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography and what she says about the matter is important:
Press Release
May 22, 2009

Loren asks DOH: Bombard people with right info on swine flu

Senator Loren Legarda yesterday said that Filipinos must take the first confirmed case of swine flu infection in the country calmly, while taking sanitary precautions like the frequent washing of hands and the use of face masks if applicable.

"The Department of Health must seek the help of media - radio, television and newspapers - to disseminate precautionary guidelines and on what should be done when swine flu infection is suspected," said Loren.

"This is one instance when the people wouldn't mind being bombarded with information by DOH. There's no such thing as information overload when it comes to swine flu. But the important thing is that our people are getting the right information."

The chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Loren added that Filipinos must also work to improve their immune system by exercising, having a balanced diet and getting plenty of rest.

"Being healthy certainly helps in view of reports that most of the 80 deaths worldwide associated with swine flu arose from complications with other ailments," she said.

As the symptoms of swine flu are very similar to common flu cases, Loren said that all Filipinos who feel feverish must immediately seek medical attention.

"The important thing is for us not to disregard symptoms as just a case of the common cold. It's better to err on the side of caution on this matter."

"But what are the symptoms? What should people do, step by step, if they suspect possible infection? The DOH must inform the people because false information can sow panic and complicate our efforts to contain the spread of the virus."

Loren said that the Philippines dealt well with the SARS and avian flu scare, but that health authorities must double their efforts against swine flu.

The senator said health officials must note how the virus quickly spread in Japan from just four confirmed cases to over 200 cases at present in at least three major cities.

Yesterday, before I learned about this press release, I called up the office of Senator Legarda to ask her help in asking the DOH to give the people more information on the H1N1 confirmed cases.  I was told by her staff that Senator Legarda is out of the country but they asked me to communicate with them formally so they can refer the matter to the Senator.

Just today, we have news telling us of Singapore's first confirmed case of H1N1.  What did the Singaporean health authorities do?  UNLIKE THE PHILIPPINES, they informed not just the Singaporean public but the entire world IMMEDIATELY about the flight which brought the patient from New York to Singapore  - the flight is Singapore Airlines SQ 25 which arrived from New York on May 26.

Dito po sa Pilipinas, hanggang ngayon MYSTERY FLIGHT NO. 1 and MYSTERY FLIGHT NO. 2 for the first two confirmed H1N1 cases.

The DOH wants us to be VIGILANT using GUESSWORK and CONJECTURE.  Hindi po tama ito at dapat tigilan na ng DOH ang pagtrato sa ating mga Pilipino na para tayong mga TANGA!

Even Tamiflu itself or Oseltamivir, which, in the absence of a vaccine, is the anti-viral drug of choice in combating the effects of H1N1 flu, does not appear to be widely available even now when we already have two confirmed H1N1 cases in the Philippines. I asked a large branch of Mercury Drug yesterday, May 26, in Caloocan City and Tamiflu still costs P150.50 per capsule but they did not have it, referring me instead to their flagship branch in the MCU area.

Full-course treatment with Tamiflu requires taking ten pills which will cost the patient P1,505.00, something beyond the reach of the vast majority of Filipinos. By now, the DOH should have its stockpile distributed to DOH hospitals at least in key city centers so that people who might need them will have them available for free. The DOH by now should have fully informed us of their plans in this regard.  Tamiflu is most effective against influenza A, which is the type of influenza under which H1N1 falls, if taken during the first two days of the flu. Beyond that, its effectiveness diminishes. The DOH should also have instructed all of us Filipinos about it by now.

We expect Senator Loren Legarda to speak out publicly, preferably in person, over this vital issue involving public interest as soon as she can! The same goes true for our other Senators, they are welcome to show and express their concern!

Flor Contemplacion Is Dead! Long Live Flor Contemplacion! (A Proposal to Establish the Flor Contemplacion Memorial for a Fallen Filipina Heroine)

17 March 2009

On March 17, 1995, fourteen (14) years ago to this date, Filipina domestic helper Flor Contemplacion was hanged by authorities in Singapore while the entire Filipino nation, helpless to the point of despair, silently prayed and wept.  It was a calamity of untold proportions for Flor Contemplacion, her family and the Philippines.  The Filipino spirit had taken physical, psychological and spiritual beatinga from mightier nations before, like Spain, the United States and Japan -- but this was the tiny-nation state of Singapore!

The furor over the apparent helplessness and negligence of the Philippine government in somehow allowing Flor Contemplacion to be hanged forced the hand of then President Fidel V. Ramos who, on March 20, 1995 issued Executive Order No. 231 creating the Presidential Fact-Finding and Policy Advisory Commission on the Protection of Overseas Filipinos, more popularly known as the Gancayco Commission.  There's nothing like a united public outcry led by migrant worker groups and women's groups like Migrante and Gabriela to compel even an excessively contemplative President to act quickly.

The creation of the Gancayco Commission because of tremendous public outrage and its aftermath including the passage of  Republic Act 8042 (the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995) was meant to ensure that the lives of OFWs would change for the better.  As to just how much better, is still a subject of debate.

But one thing is clear, Flor Contemplacion's death forced a nation to come to grips with the harsh realities engendered by Filipino labor migration, the Filipino diaspora.  Whether she wanted it or not, Flor Contemplacion stands as our nation's symbol of sacrifice for family and for people.

From where I stand, this generation of Filipinos should establish a memorial to honor the life, death and legacy of Flor Contemplacion.  I don't know how long it will take for that dream to be realized but when the Flor Contemplacion Memorial or monument is established, the Filipino nation that helplessly grieved and wept in 1995 will slowly cease to exist and in its place, a Philippines united in caring for our OFWs will emerge, a nation that truly knows how to look after its very own!

Even as I write, heaven seems to be shedding its own tears in memory of Flor Contemplacion. And since we speak of a memorial or monument, the pictures below will show you that it's raining right now (10:03 am) at the Monumento area.

Proof, I am sure, that Somebody up there is watching intently and He is planning something good for the OFWs and the Philippines.  For that to happen, He expects us not only to pray but to join our hands in earnest effort and collective action.  Then, and only then, will true blessing come to the Filipino nation.

Filipina heroine Flor Contemplacion is dead!  Long live Flor Contemplacion!

To God be the glory, always!
