2 June 2009

The Philippine Embassy in Brasilia has confirmed the presence of a Filipino aboard what is now presumed to be ill-fated Air France Flight 447 bound for Paris from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. No name was given because according to Air France office in Brazil, "only the nationalities of passengers are available at this time."

This information comes from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website.  Here is that DFA statement:

Filipino on Board Crashed Air France Plane

June 2, 2009 by DFA-PISU

PR-327-09, 2 June 2009 – The Philippine Embassy in Brasilia has confirmed that a Filipino was among the 228 listed passengers of Air France Flight 447 which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on the evening of May 31 (Brasilia time).

Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Christopher B. Montero reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy immediately contacted the Air France office in Brazil and was advised that only the nationalities of passengers are available at this time.

The French Embassy in Brasilia, however, assured Philippine Embassy officials that the complete identity of the Filipino passenger will be provided as soon as it is ascertained.

Air France Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean en route to Paris, France from the Galeao International Airport in Brazil. There were 228 passengers on board the aircraft.

Charge d’Affaires Montero said Brazil’s military and aviation authorities have sent search and rescue teams near the island of Fernando de Noronha, about 1,500 miles east of Rio de Janeiro, but have yet to find the plane and its passengers. END

I am now watching CNN and they are showing relatives of Flight 447 passengers arriving and gathering at airports in both Rio de Janeiro and Paris.

Flight 447 reportedly suffered electrical problems after experiencing turbulence. Last communication with the aircraft was more than 24 hours ago.  The Brazilian air force is still continuing the search for Flight 447.
