Filipino Crew Member Among 153 People Aboard Crashed Yemen Airways (Yemenia) Airbus A310 in the Indian Ocean Off Comoros; 5-Year-Old Child Rescued -

30 June 2009

A Filipino crew member of Yemen Airways is among the 153 people aboard the ill-fated Airbus A310 which crashed into the Indian Ocean off the nation island of Comoros.  The jetliner was trying to land into Comoros amidst very bad weather when it crashed into the sea.

This is the second time that an Airbus plane has crashed into the sea.  On May 31, an Air France Airbus A330-200 with 228 people on board crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after leaving Rio de Janeiro, Brazil bound for Paris, France.

The Associated Press reported that French aviation inspectors found a "number of faults" on the downed plane during a 2007 inspection.  Questions were also raised as to "why passengers were put on another jet in the Yemeni capital of San'a."

These are video clips from CNN:

UPDATE
1 July 2009

An ABS-CBN article (based on an Agence France Presse report) entitled DFA checking Filipino casualty in Yemeni plane crash says this:
Reports said authorities in Yemen fear that only a 14-year-old girl passenger of the Yemeni Airbus jet survived the crash. The plane had 153 passengers.

"The girl, aged 14, has arrived at the El Maarouf hospital. We were told that her condition is not worrisome," Red Cross spokeswoman Ramulati Ben Ali said.
There appears to be a conflict between what Associated Press originally reported and what the CNN video interview with the Chairman of Yemenia appeared to confirm — that the sole survivor was a 5-year-old boy and this newer piece of news which says that the only survivor is a 14-year-old girl.  For now, while we lack authoritative confirmation,  let's hope that both of them survived.

On the matter of whether a Pinay crew person was aboard the ill-fated plane, this Agence France-Presse report carried by ABS-CBN, Pinay among crew of crashed Yemeni plane, seemed to indicate that the report may not be true after all.  Sana nga!

UPDATE (13-Year-Old Girl, Bahia Bakari, is the Lone Survivor)
2 July 2009

It's been confirmed that a 13-year-old teenager and not a 5-year-old boy is the lone survivor of the Yemenia jet crash two days ago. Bahia Bakari, who was  traveling on the flight with her mother was fetched from the sea while hanging on to debris.  Bahia who sustained cuts to her face and a fractured collar bone is now recovering well in a hospital in Moroni, the capital of the Comoros.

Bahia's father, Kassim Bakari, who also received early news that a 5-year-old child had been rescued, was jubilant about her daughter's rescue although he could hardly believe it.

More on this amazing story of survival and of hope beyond despair from David McKenzie of CNN reporting from Nairobi, Kenya:

PR-331-09, 2 June 2009 – A Filipino seafarer was among the 228 listed passengers of Air France Flight 447 which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on the evening of May 31 (Brasilia time).

The Filipino was identified as Arden Jugueta, a seafarer whose vessel docked in Rio de Janeiro and who was to take a connecting flight from Paris to Manila.

The French Foreign Ministry notified the Philippine Embassy in Paris of the Filipino seafarer’s identity. Similarly, Mr. Jugueta’s ship manning company confirmed that he was on board Air France Flight 447.

The Paris main offices of Air France and the local shipping agency have communicated with the family of Mr. Jugueta.

The Department of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the latest developments in the ongoing search and rescue operations by military and aviation authorities of Brazil, France and Spain near the island of Fernando de Noronha, about 1,500 miles east of Rio de Janeiro.

The DFA will also extend assistance to Mr. Jugueta’s family.

The Philippine Embassy in Brasilia has confirmed the presence of a Filipino aboard what is now presumed to be ill-fated Air France Flight 447 bound for Paris from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. No name was given because according to Air France office in Brazil, "only the nationalities of passengers are available at this time."

This information comes from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website.  Here is that DFA statement:

Alec Baldwin Says, "I'd Like to Offer an Apology" to Anyone Who Took Offense" to My Pinay Mail-Order-Bride Joke

21 May 2009

"I'd like to offer an apology ... " It is with those words that Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin began his blog post to seek rectification of his remarks over the David Letterman show on May 12 which triggered a strong outburst of public condemnation from various sectors of Philippine society, most notably from Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr., Senator Loren Legarda, and Gabriela.

Baldwin's blog post appears in The Huffington Post.  The full text of his apology reads:

I'd like to offer an apology and a clarification to remarks I made recently.

While on the David Letterman program, I joked that I might need a "mail-order bride" to achieve the goal of having more children in my life. I believe that most people understood that this was a joke and took it as such. (A dated reference, no doubt, and another sign of my advancing age.) However, I do apologize to anyone who took offense. The comments of some Philippine government officials come as no surprise to me, either. Even the one by a former action film star-turned-Senator who beckoned me to come to the Philippines so he could "beat" me over my comment.

Such anger and frustration about the issue of sex trafficking is understandable. The Philippines has suffered significant problems with the issue of sex trafficking and I would like to turn your attention to the work of an organization called Love146 that my brother Stephen educated me about. Visit their website at www.love146.org and learn of the important work that is being done, in various regions of the world, by Rob Morris and his co-founders and staff.

I had met with Rob in New York, some months before the Letterman appearance, in the hopes of helping him raise money for this group. Again, I apologize for the perceived insensitivity of that remark and ask you to visit the Love146 site.

This is GMA-7's report on Alec Baldwin's apology courtesy of GMAnews.tv:

Alec Baldwin's bio is here in his website.  It says in part:

Alec has starred in several films, including "Beetlejuice", "Miami Blues", "The Hunt for Red October", "Malice", "The Shadow", "Glengarry Glen Ross", "Heaven's Prisoners", "Ghosts of Mississippi", "The Edge", "The Cat in the Hat", "The Aviator", "The Departed", "Running with Scissors", "The Good Shepherd" and many others. He received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor for "The Cooler", directed by Wayne Kramer (2003) and was nominated for an Oscar for the same film.

On television, Baldwin is currently starring in NBC's Emmy award winning comedy series, "30 ROCK", for which he received the 2007 Golden Globe, SAG and Television Critics Association awards as Best Actor in a comedy. Baldwin has starred on "Knot's Landing" for CBS and numerous other TV shows including "Dress Grey" (a miniseries for NBC), "Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial (for TNT) and appearances on "Saturday Night Live" (too many to count).

His production company, El Dorado Pictures, has produced such films as "The Confession" (for Showtime) which won the Writer's Guild Award for Best original screenplay and David Mamet's "State and Main", among others.

Alec is an out-spoken supporter of various causes related to public policy, including environmentalism, the government's support of the arts, campaign finance reform, animal rights and gun control. He serves on the board of directors of the East Hampton Daycare Center, People For American Way and NYU Tisch School of the Arts Dean's Council. He is on the advisory board of the NYU/Brennan Center for Justice and the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. He is a vigorous supporter of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), just to name a couple.

Baldwin is a graduate of New York University (BFA, Tisch School of the Arts), 1994.

Alec has a daughter, Ireland Eliesse.

In preparing this website, Alec has said, "I'd like to welcome all those who are curious about my work and where that might be headed in the next several years. Acting has provided me with some of the highest highs in my life. I hope that I will have the opportunity to make more films and appear in shows that people want to see. To be able to do this for a living is a tremendous gift."

More on this when I return.

Sis and Eat Bulaga Go Gaga Over David Archuleta, May 14, 2009, The Philippines

14 May 2009   3:22pm, Manila time

These are notes I took while watching David Archuleta at GMA Channel 7's Sis and Eat Bulaga this morning and early afternoon.

First off, Sis with  Gelli de Belen, Carmina Villaroel and Janice de Belen.  It started at 10:30 a.m.  They titled the show David Archuleta – Idol Kita! Matinding Saludo, Dadaanin sa Kanta.

Comments and responses by David Archuleta are in bold italics.

First song David learned:  Castle on a Cloud, Les Miserables.

What songs did you grow up with?  Lots of jazz ...

Favorite song now?  It’s hard to pick …  I’m Yours by Jason Mraz.

10:43am

Favorite all-time performer?  Michael Jackson… so many great songs.

Other favorite performers?  OK.  Stevie Wonder. Jason Mraz,  Natasha Bedingfield,  Sara Bareilles, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey.

They talked about the talent search when David sang to Kelly Clarkson (the time was 10:53am).

Kyla sang (I'm still trying to figure out fro my notes what she sang), 10:55 am.

All these singers can sing better than I can… Filipinos are so amazingly talented.

The three show hosts introduce Kyla, "She’s our Soul Princess."

At 10:56 am, Kyla was making frantic requests for her to have a picture with David Archuleta. I believe it was Carmina who took their picture to the relief of grateful fan Kyla.

Gelli, Carmina and Janice gave some souvenirs to David:

a Barong Tagalog

a male doll clad in a barong

a bottle with a boat inside it (David kept asking, How did it get in there?)

a miniature Jeepney

a miniature Ice Cream Cart

At 11:21 am, it happened, David Archuleta sang A Little Too Not over You and the audience went wild. What they just got was a preview of Saturday's concert.

After David's song, Fearless Productions executives, Jomari Yllana and Cong. Ronald Singson invited the audience to see the concert on Saturday, May 16; tickets are available at Ticketnet and Ticketworld according to Jomari. By 11:28am, David's unforgettable stint at Sis was over. Sulit ang ipinila at ipinaghintay ng mga fans.

Here is the video clip from GMAnews.tv on David Archuleta's visit at Sis:

Next stop in the afternoon was Eat Bulaga, also at Channel 7.

David was introduced at 1:39pm and immediately sings Crush.

“All the boys and girls are screaming … not just the girls,” that was the crowd's reaction according to Julia Clarete who is herself a talented singer.

Pia Guanio, mention Twitter and David's expression of appreciation and surprise at how Filipinos have received them here.   Pia also mentioned that David love Philippine mango.

I think I was in heaven when I was eating it … I love mangoes.

I want to go to a real Filipino restaurant and just try real Filipino cuisine.

"Do you know it's Stevie Wonder’s birthday today?"  Oh yeah, he’s timeless.

What song of Stevie Wonder do you like?  I love Sir Duke.

And then David began to hum it ... to the delight of the crowd.

Tomorrow, Pia announced, it will be David Cook's turn to visit Eat Bulaga!

The time was 1:47pm and everybody began to say goodbye to the one and only David Archuleta.
