We Join GMA News in a Salute to the DepEd's Mobile Teachers

26 June 2009

The DepEd does have many people it can be proud of.  Among them are the DepEd's mobile teachers.

GMA News pays tribute to these unsung heroes of the DepEd in this special report by Rhea Santos wherein she joins Catalina Ibarra at a typical day in a mobile teacher's life:

If the DepEd's higher-ranking officials approach their jobs with the same devotion to public service as these mobile teachers, then the DepEd would not have been associated with a number of scandals over the years.

Lourdes School, Karangalan Elementary School Suspend Classes Because of H1N1 Even as the DepEd Adopts "Selective Quarantine" Strategy

19 June 2009

Even as the DepEd adopts what it calls "selective quarantine" instead of total school shutdown response to the rapid spread of the H1N1 flu virus in the country, two schools still suspended their classes yesterday because of instances of the virus infection.

These schools are Lourdes School in Mandaluyong and Karangalan Elementary School in Cainta, Rizal.  At Lourdes School, classes was suspended for ten (10) days beginning yesterday after a student tested positive for H1N1. At Karangalan in Cainta, classes were suspended yesterday afternoon after three teachers and 43 students showed symptoms of H1N1 infection.  Mayor Mon Ilagan of Cainta confirmed that Cainta already has one instance of confirmed H1N1 infection.

Under the "selective quarantine" strategy, only those students, sections or grade levels affected by possible infection or exposure to infection will be required not to report to their classes while they undergo observation or treatment either at home or in medical facilities.  Ateneo, Miriam College and UP Diliman are among the schools implementing the "selective quarantine" strategy.

Jaypee Soriano of GMA News reported in the Saksi video below that as of Wednesday, June 18, there are already 71 confirmed H1N1 cases in 16 school, colleges and universities in the country.

My guess is that there is no choice for some schools but to suspend classes totally if they encounter H1N1 infection especially if that is the first time.  That is the natural human reaction.  No amount of strategizing on the part of the DepEd can prevent that.

It was obvious from the start that the one-way contact tracing implemented by the DOH was too slow in tracking those possibly infected.

If a two-way contact tracing system was adopted —meaning the DOH on one hand calling up people while simultaneously, on the other hand, the passengers in the affected flights (who would have been informed via TV, print, or radio that they came in with persons who eventually turned out H1N1 positive) contacting and/or reporting to the DOH  —things would not have gone out of hand like it did now.

Nanaykupo!

DepEd Scraps Its P427 Million Noodles with Fresh Eggs, Food for School Program Amidst Charges of Overpricing

28 May 2009

Secretary Jesli Lapus of the DepEd has cancelled its P427 million noodles project amidst charges of overpricing and other irregularities.

This is the ABS-CBN video report via kyte.tv:

These articles discuss in greater detail the background of this case:

Karaingan, Isigaw Na!)

21 May 2009   12:23am

I'm watching QTV's Balitanghali and it shows Cesar Apolinario of GMA-7 doing a reporter's stunt to negotiate the maze of school desks in what he described as a "classroom" for fifty (50) students measuring "dalawang dipa ko."  Aruykopo!

Here is the video clip of Cesar Apolinario's report courtesy of GMAnews.tv:

IMPORTANT UPDATE
A 'Thank You' Message to the Office of Sen. Mar Roxas
21 May 2009  5:20pm

I just finished talking over the phone (just a few minutes ago) with Mr. Luis Abad, legislative staff of Senator Mar Roxas.

I called up their office two days ago (May 19, Tuesday) and I was able to talk with Mr. Abad and, at my request, he promised me that they would follow up my problem with the DepEd NCR regarding the documents I was seeking regarding the application for tuition fee increase filed by the private school where my youngest child is studying.

I am happy to report that Mr. Abad informed me just a while ago that they have called up the DepEd NCR and that the DepEd NCR has promised to give them copies of the documents I was asking. My understanding is that they will be picking up the documents from the DepEd NCR.

Thank you to Mr. Luis Abad and to Senator Mar Roxas.

Nanaykupo!

I will email this tonight to the Office of Senator Mar Roxas.  Why don't you do the same thing para mas lalo siyang makinig?!

Maraming salamat po.
