In the hands of 53-year-old Samar native Jerry Orbiso fell the crucial task of driving for more than eight hours the flatbed truck that bore the casket of President Cory Aquino during the historic people's funeral on August 5 from Manila Cathedral to Manila Memorial Park.
Not as visible as the four Cory honor guards who stood their way to instant fame and celebrity status, Orbiso nevertheless carried within his person the once-in-a-lifetime mission of bringing to her final earthly resting place the most beloved of all Philippine presidents.
Although we did not realize it then, on his shoulders hang a nation's hopes of an incident-free burial for President Cory Aquino.
That nobody seemed to notice him until now is a tribute to the skill with which Jerry Orbiso accomplished his mission.
Orbiso was also the same driver who guided the flatbed truck that transferred President Cory Aquino's remains from De La Salle Greenhills to the Manila Cathedral on Monday, August 3, a trip that took all of seven hours.
