17  June 2009

Yesterday, June 16, 2009, the Philippine Senate started its inquiry into vanishing cellphone loads, a phenomenon that has stricken no less than the Honorable Juan Ponce Enrile, Senate President.

As the investigation began yesterday, cellphone users across the country cheered as the Senate once again did this country some concrete service.  June 16, 2009 was a milestone for the Filipino consumer.

But even as the Senate protects the rights of the Philippine consuming public, I fervently wish that it will also take one simple step of reminding our public officials to stop the ongoing desecration of the Monumento. Chief Justice Reynato Puno reminded us in stark terms several days ago, "Wala pong tunay na katwiran na magdiwang ang ating kalayaan kung ganito ang kalagayan ng ating Inang Bayan."

He must have had the abject poverty widespread in our country, the untold graft and corruption and the looming specter of Cha-cha and Con-Ass uppermost in his mind when he uttered those words.

But right in front of his eyes, there was these — giant billboards dwarfing the Monumento, a giant crane and a drilling equipment boring a hole right at the Monumento Rotonda where, reportedly, foundation posts in support of either a physical interconnection between the LRT and MRT3 or a passenger walkway will be placed.

This is a desecration that even the dreaded Japanese Imperial Army did not dare do during the Second World War.  Which Chief Justice of the Philippines, do you think, will approve of that?!

I call on the Philippine Senate to come to the defense of our national dignity and honor by inquiring into the vanishing Monumento.  Two vistas of the Monumento are now gone — the one at Rizal Avenue which has been blocked long ago by the LRT

and now, the vista from EDSA which is now blocked by the MRT3 whose northwestern end is now just meters away from the Monumento.

Right now, the remaining two vistas of the Monumento are from Samson Road and MacArthur Avenue.  Once they go down, the Monumento will be completely encircled ... vanished from view ... the greatest monument to valor and to love of freedom on earth imprisoned! It is a cultural holocaust of unimaginable proportions!

The entire Filipino nation will be guilty of nonfeasance, to borrow the term used by Senator Richard Gordon in describing the negligent actuations of telcos and government regulators in yesterday's historic hearing of the vanishing load issue. We will be the laughingstock of the world and by that time, we shall thoroughly deserve it.

While Con-Ass threatens  to destroy the political fabric of our country, the cultural holocaust at the Monumento signals something far worse — it will finally destroy the spirit of our nation. There are things that money cannot buy and that is the honor and dignity of a free, self-respecting nation. The fact that the Philippines is a states party to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention of 1972 only makes our responsibility as a nation even more onerous. We expect the Senate to stand as one and deliver the message that we will not allow this continuing desecration of our honor and dignity as a nation at the Monumento.

This is how the Monumento looks as Chief Justice Reynato Puno delivered his now-immortal "Walang tunay na katwirang magdiwang ng kalayaan" speech on June 12, 2009.  That's how beautiful this monument is with the golden rays of the Philippine sun projecting powerfully from the octagonal base — not only as an aesthetic icon but as the virtual embodiment of our existence, honor and dignity as a nation.

Letters from our individual Senators and if possible, from the Chief Justice, asking Chairman Ambeth Ocampo and Commissioners of the National Historical Institute, DOTC, LRTA, MMDA and the local government of Caloocan City to explain why they are allowing these things to happen are a giant step in the right direction. A Senate Resolution expressing the same sentiment and a public inquiry into this monstrous disregard of our cultural heritage will be even better.

Maraming salamat po and God bless.

Photos of Platinum Plans and Legacy Pre-Need Industry Victims and of Dubai Bus Drivers and their Families Who Sought Assistance of the Senate

8 June 2009

Below are photos I took in the Senate of the victims of the pre-need industry fiasco in the Philippines and of Dubai bus drivers and their families.

The two Senate hearings were conducted by the committees of Senator Mar Roxas and Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

Our nation are hurting and our people need help.  The SEC, for the first time, has shown encouraging signs of heeding my suggestion of holding a pre-need industry conference to find long-term solutions to the problems besetting the industry and short-term ones that may give some  relief to distressed planholders and beneficiaries.

The collapse of big pre-need companies have left many parents who invested in the pension plans and educational plans empty-handed thus jeopardizing the chance to study of millions of Filipino children. The Legacy scandal has rocked the nation and deprived investors of hundreds of millions of pesos in investments.

There are, if not mistaken, 67 or 68 bus drivers still left stranded in Dubai.  They can't pay the P3.6 million overstaying fees that's been slapped against them by the Dubai government and they don't have money to pay their plane fares back home.  On top of that, the lending company from whom they were made to borrow money to pay placement fee to the recruiter is now running after them.

Let's do all that we can to help our OFWs and the victims of the pre-need industry fiasco in the Philippines.

More on this when I return. (Please drop back again; I'll try to tell more about the stories behind these pictures when I return.)

VIDEO UPDATE

I've located the ABS-CBN video clip showing the wives of stranded drivers in Dubai seeking the help of our government for their quick return home. The bus drivers and their families here are being assisted by the Ople Policy Center.

27 May 2009

On the eve of his appearance before the Senate, Dr. Hayden Kho gave this exclusive interview with Mariz Umali of GMA-7. One of the things Hayden asks for is for the public not to involve his parents anymore in the ongoing controversy.

Katrina Halili Fights Back, Files Case with the NBI As Senator Bong Revilla Vows to Put Behind Bars Those Responsible for Sex Video Scandal

21 May 2009

With the help of Senator Ramong "Bong" Revilla, Jr., Katrina Halili went to the NBI and the Department of Justice yesterday to file a complaint regarding the sex video scandal involving her and Dr. Hayden Kho.

These are the video clips from GMAnews.tv:

Senator Bong Revilla, in spite of the criticisms against him for grandstanding, deserves credit for leading the charge in this fight that has won the support of many of our legislators, the DOJ and NBI, the CHR and the general public.

I'll email this to the office of Senator Bong Revilla. Sige na, NOW NA!  Wala tayong pakikinabangangan kung hindi tayo kikilos!

The email address of Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr. is:

Senate Proceeds with Preliminary Inquiry on Ethics Complaint Against Senator Villar Before the Senate Committee of the Whole

BREAKING NEWS

14 May 2009   11:42am

Airing live at ANC right now is the preliminary inquiry of the ethics complaint against Senator Manny Villar.  Atty. Francisco is making a presentation of some of the evidence that will be used against Senator Manny Villar if and when the Senate committee of the whole decides to hear the case against him.

On clarification by Senator Mar Roxas, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile made clear that, "This is not yet evidence. This is simply a presentation of what counsel (Atty. Francisco) is saying is evidence.  It is for us to determine whether to accept this or not and proceed with the hearing against the respondent."

The Senators I see present are:

1)  Senator Juan Ponce Enrile
2) Senator Richard Gordon
3) Senator Mar Roxas
4) Senator Noynoy Aquino
5) Senator Greg Honasan
6) Senator Jamby Madrigal

Senate President Enrile, "The chair will now declare the completion of the preliminary inquiry and close it and direct the general counsel and the special counsel of the Senate committee acting as a committee of the whole to prepare a report on the result of this preliminary inquiry for the signature of this chair until Saturday.  The report must be submitted on Saturday this week."

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile concluded the session with these words, "The next hearing will be on Monday at 9 o'clock in the morning.  Everybody is notified.  At that point, we will make a determination as to whether there is credible, substantial evidence presented at this preliminary inquiry.  Thereafter, we will make the necessary public announcement regarding the next step to be taken in connection with this case.  Motion to suspend.  Session is suspended until next Monday at 9 o'clock in the morning."

ANC's Ricky Carandang is explaining to the TV audience the nature of the charges against Senator Villar, "In the connection of the Coastal Road and the South Superhighway ... where you see the green line is where the original road is supposed to be and where you see the red line is the extension allegedly made at the behest of Senator Villar where his companies allegedly profited."

I understand that earlier in the inquiry, Senator Pimentel and other Villar allies in the Senate staged a walkout.

ANC's presentation entitled Senate hearing: Villar Ethics Complaint just ended, it's now 11:59am.

Judge Lorredo Says He's Being Pressured by "Lolo Gonzales" to Inhibit and Paints a Possible "Ninoy" Scenario and Martial Law in Lozada-Defensor Case

THE JUN LOZADA WATCH

14 May 2009

In a bizarre twist in the tangled perjury charge filed by defeated administration senatorial candidate Mike Defensor against ZTE-NBN scandal whisteblower Jun Lozada, Judge Lorredo of the Manila MTC Branch 26 is insisting that Malacañang is pressuring him to inhibit from the case. He identified DOJ Secretary Raul Gonzales, whom he called "Lolo Gonzales," as oneof those pressuring him to drop the case.

Even more intriguing is his claim that the situation might lead into a scenario reminiscent of the assasination of the late Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. who was gunned down on August 21, 1983 as he was going down the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport.  Ninoy's death would signal the start of the end of the Marcos regime.

Judge Lorredo painted this scenario, "Patayin si Lozada, pak!  Patay!  Just imagine, he will be another Ninoy. Meron lang sumigaw na 'Punta tayo sa Malacañang, pupunta 'yan eh.  Martial law.'"

"Sana nga I'm very wrong with my analysis of the whole thing.  Pero pa'no kung tama ako?  I will not be able to forgive myself.  I will not be able to sleep well," added the now-controversial judge who insisted that he is not going to inhibit from the case in spite of the mounting pressures.

To prevent such an eventuality, Lorredo is hopeful that he could convince Defensor and Lozada to settle their differences amicably.  He even made an appeal to Manny Pacquiao to attend the next hearing of the case so he (Pacquiao) could talk to and convince Defensor and Lozada to come to terms regarding the case.

Lozada, meanwhile, is adamant that he just needs to see Defensor face-to-face in court so he could repeat his assertions that the latter tried to bribe him to keep quiet with what he knew about the ZTE-NBN deal. He said that his stint in jail would be in vain if he would settle the case with Defensor.

A week ago, on May 7, Judge Lorredo issued an order granting the release of Jun Lozada on Senate recognizance as a result of a motion backed by a Mar Roxas-authored Resolution that was adopted by the Senate. That story is told in the following articles:

VINDICATION! — "My decision to protest the abuses ... by this government by refusing to post bail has now yielded victory" — Jun Lozada, May 7, 2009

THE JUN LOZADA WATCH

7 May 2009 11:16pm

Earlier tonight, I had the opportunity to visit Jun Lozada at the Medical Center Manila where he's still gradually recuperating after suffering from low blood pressure and dehydration the past few days.

I was in his room for, I guess, nearly thirty minutes.

Before I left, I requested Jun to give his message to our people and despite his condition (with dextrose needle still embedded in his left hand), he happily obliged. He wrote the message on a regular size bond paper; it's actually a printout of my latest post, The Senate Resolution that Won Back Custody Over Jun Lozada, SRN-1049 (Adopted Resolution No. 172), Filed by Senator Mar Roxas, before coming over to Medical Center Manila.  As he began to write his message on the right-hand margin of the page, I took some pictures of Jun Lozada; it felt as if I had encountered a man who personified the best in both our national heroes, Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, all at once.  Here was a man who has courage, intelligence, love of country and fellowmen, humility and faith in abundant measure.

This is the text of Jun's message which he wrote in Tagalog (Pilipino) from his hospital bed:
Mayo 7, 2009
MCM Hospital
Rm 8837
8:55pm

Jun Lozada

Here is my translation in English:
May 7, 2009
MCM Hospital
Rm 8837
8:55pm

For the Filipino People,

I am glad to communicate with you through this letter. Thank you for your continued support in my fight for truth and justice.

This day is an important one for our struggle.  My decision to protest the abuses against me by this government by refusing to post bail has now yielded victory.

We are going to face more trials ahead and I'm renewing my appeal for you to continue praying so that our Lord will guide us once again.

Jun Lozada

I would like to commend here the Senate security detail that was guarding Jun Lozada.  For obvious reasons, I did not take pictures of them or of their deployment. I can only say that they're all polite and did not appear menacing. I had a pleasant conversation with some of them while waiting for my turn to be led inside Jun's room.

Theirs could be one of the most important jobs in the world right now.  With custody over Jun Lozada wrestled away from the police through the petition for recognizance filed by the Senate, they are holding with them literally a national treasure.

Even closer to Jun is his "close-in security detail" led by Sr. Mary John Mananzan and her army of sisters who have been with Jun since the beginning of his ordeal.

And to those of us who believe that Jun Lozada is divinely protected, there is a third force of powerful unseen beings we call angels who keep watch over him.

And yes, if this formidable security is not enough, we have our God who never sleeps nor slumbers. Nothing happens without His permission. As long as He wills it, Jun Lozada cannot be touched.  And that's where our prayers, our praise and our intercession come in.

To God be the glory!

Author's Note:  8 May 2009, 2:30am
My scanner is still down and my camera would not communicate with my PC for me to transfer the picture of the piece of bond paper that bears Jun's message. I'll upload it as soon as I can. Thank you for bearing with me.
