NDCC Chairman and Defense Secretary Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro has announced that Manila and 24 other provinces have been placed under a state of calamity as a result of the widespread flooding brought by storm Ondoy.
The 25 provinces are Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Viscaya, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Quezon, Isabela, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro Oriental, Mindoro Occidental, Marinduque, Camarines Norte and Bataan.
Reuters reports that about 60 people lost their lives, as many as 47 by drowning while 11 others by collapsing walls and rising floodwaters.
According to Pagasa, the torrential rains poured by Ondoy measured at 341 millimeters from 8am to 2pm Saturday broke the standing record of 334 mm recorded in June 1967.
