The public is warned to be extra vigilant and extra careful regarding the acquisition and use of LPG tanks. Buy your LPG tanks from authorized dealers and examine them closely especially the bottom portion for any defects before installation and use.
Agusan del Sur Representative Rodolfo Plaza says that 6 million defective LPG tanks out of 12 million are in use throughout the country and these defective LPG tanks have caused 2,252 fire incidents for the ten-year period from 1997-2007.
A bill imposing stricter guidelines on the sale of LPG tanks is being pushed by Congressman Plaza and Senator Mar Roxas. Senator Roxas presented to the media Abigail Eugenio who survived an LPG tank explosion but still bear the wounds of the incident.
Mrs. Merceditas Pastrana, President of the Philippine Association of Cylinder Manufacturers, urged the public to closely examine the LPG tanks that they buy especially the underside since the the bodies of LPG cylinders may be well-painted to conceal the defects.
DTI Asst. Secretary Angel Pelayo says they are strictly monitoring establishments selling LPG cylinders but obviously, the DTI needs to do more considering the extent of the problem and the very real dangers that it poses to the general public.
