The Detroit Pistons has announced that Chuck Daly passed away several hours ago at age 78 because of pancreatic cancer. Last March, the Pistons disclosed that Daly had been undergoing treatment for the same illness.
Daly may not be the best basketball coach in history but he did coach the greatest team basketball there ever was, the USA Dream Team that ripped apart all opposition on its way to winning gold in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. The Dream Team had several basketball legends in its lineup — Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley — to name just a few.
Below are ESPN reports on Chuck Daly's passing:
Daly coached the Detroit Pistons to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 1994.
